Why Is Indoor Air Quality So Important?

Indoor air quality, or IAQ, is the measure of air quality within and outside a building or structure. Its impact is critical to the health and comfort of occupants. Indoor air pollutants can be up to 5 times higher than outdoor levels, and in extreme cases, can reach up to 100 times higher according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Poor indoor air quality can lead to numerous health issues, including allergies, asthma, respiratory infections, and even lung cancer. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 4.3 million people die each year from exposure to household air pollution. Additionally, long-term exposure to certain environmental pollutants can cause or exacerbate chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema.

How to Improve Indoor Air Quality

There are several strategies to improve and maintain good indoor air quality in residential properties:

  • Regular cleaning. Regularly cleaning your home helps reduce dust, pet dander, and other allergens. Vacuum carpets and upholstery frequently and use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter to capture smaller particles. Additionally, wash bedding and curtains regularly to minimize allergen accumulation.
  • Air filters and purifiers. Using air filters or purifiers can help remove contaminants from the air. HEPA filters, for example, can capture 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns3. Air purifiers with activated carbon filters can also reduce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odors.
  • Proper ventilation. Ensure your home has adequate ventilation to allow fresh outdoor air to replace stale indoor air. Use exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms, and open windows when the weather permits. You should also consider using an air exchange system to bring fresh air into your home without losing heat or cooling.
  • Control humidity. High humidity can promote mold and mildew growth, which can trigger allergies and asthma. Maintain indoor humidity levels between 30-50% using dehumidifiers or air conditioners with built-in humidity control.
  • Minimize indoor pollutants. Choose low-VOC paints and cleaning products and avoid smoking indoors. It is also important to store chemicals and pesticides in a well-ventilated area away from living spaces.
  • Routine maintenance. Regularly inspect and maintain heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to ensure they are operating efficiently and not contributing to poor indoor air quality.

To ensure a healthy indoor environment, you should also consider the following tips:

  • Regularly monitor indoor air quality using IAQ monitors, which can measure pollutants like VOCs, particulate matter, and humidity levels.
  • Place indoor plants throughout your home, as they can help filter the air and improve overall air quality.
  • Change air filters in your HVAC system regularly, typically every 3 months or according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Be mindful of outdoor air quality when opening windows for ventilation, especially during high-pollen seasons or when pollution levels are elevated.
